MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN KIDS ’ LIVES
As CEO of Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Northern California ,
Margaret Bryan oversees all aspects of its operation , including program development and strategic planning . She leads a hospital recognized internationally for providing highly specialized care to children with complex medical conditions . Bryan is known for tenacity and innovative thinking , which proved essential to opening the Sacramento hospital in 1997 adjacent to the UC Davis Medical Center , its affiliated partner .
Bryan ’ s career began at UC San Francisco , following her education at UC Berkeley . She was responsible for pediatric services when approached by Shriners in the early 1990s . Bryan eagerly tackled the opportunity to build a pediatric specialty hospital from the ground up . “ It had every challenge , including building the facility , forming relationships and affiliations , and entering a new market ,” she says .
Summing up her greatest joy , Bryan says , “ We help kids with very serious conditions and injuries reach their full potential . It is a privilege to be associated with the Shriners , whose remarkable gift to children ’ s health makes our work possible .” Never one to shrink from a challenge , she embraces hard work and enjoys organizing people to achieve a goal , the essence of leadership .
Bryan recently spoke at the World Economic Forum on ways the hospital improves the health of kids with very complex special needs , a worldwide issue . She also joined McKinsey & Company ’ s Remarkable Women Program , where small groups of women leaders from across the nation share challenges and successes present in their roles .
“ One measure of the quality of a community is its commitment to the least fortunate among us . By that measure , Sacramento is incredibly supportive ,” Bryan says . Looking ahead , her goals for the hospital are continued growth , advances in clinical outcomes , and strengthening the partnership with UC Davis Health .
“ To succeed for future generations of children , we will need sustained community support . Thankfully , Sacramento has always proven it cares ,” Bryan says .
“ Being associated with Shriners and being able to do this work is a gift .”
