A minor miracle of logistics , and a major force of will from Dorna and its partners , saw WorldSBK in the vanguard of global racing restarting that same year . Remember , we had that restart in Jerez , plus not one but two back-to-back Rounds at MotorLand and then that first ever Catalunya Round .
Success breeds profile , breeds interest , of course , so it is no surprise that ever since Carlos Checa won the WorldSBK title with Althea Ducati in 2011 Spain has paid a bit more attention to the production derived WorldSBK series . And when Dorna took over shortly after , we were going to have more Spanish everything on the regular menu . That ’ s not to say that there were not many Spanish riders , some very good Spanish riders , who had already competed at the top level in WorldSBK . Ruben Xaus was the first Spaniard to win a WorldSBK race , in 2001 . But in total five have won races - Xaus , Checa , Fonsi Nieto , Jordi Torres and most recently and comprehensively , Alvaro Bautista .
Expand that Spanish success story to podium finishers and we end up with 13 riders in all . As well as those mentioned already , we can add current WorldSBK Series Director Gregorio Lavilla ( 12 podiums ), Xavi Fores ( six podiums ), Juan Borja ( two podiums ) and there is one podium apiece for Juan Lopez Mella , Daniel Amatriain , Juan Garriga and - most recently - Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge . ( Maybe as we are talking about successful Spanish riders we should follow the late , great Angel Nieto ’ s convention and say that there have been 12 + 1 Spanish podium finishers in WorldSBK , not the dreaded 13 ?).
Moving back up a gear in the performance league , two Iberian riders have now won WorldSBK Championships . The aforementioned Carlos Checa and his famous number seven proved a WorldSBK force to be reckoned with when he moved over from MotoGP™ in 2008 . A proven MotoGP™ race victor , he won two WorldSBK races at the unique Miller Motorsports Park in the USA on a Honda in his first year . He needed to wait until he got his hands on Ducati Vee-twin power to really start smashing the Spanish riders ’ glass ceiling . He won 22 of his 24 WorldSBK race victories on Ducatis , and of course some of those assured an inspired 2011 WorldSBK championship win .

Eso no signidica que no hubiese un puñado de pilotos españoles en el WorldSBK , algunos de ellos muy buenos , que ya habían estado compitiendo al más alto nivel . Rubén Xaus fue el primero en ganar una prueba en 2001 . Después de él también ganarían carreras Carlos Checa , Fonsi Nieto , Jordi Torres y , más recientemente , Álvaro Bautista .
Si abrimos la mirada a todos los que han subido al podio alguna vez encontraremos un total de 13 pilotos . Además de los ya citados , hay que añadir al actual director del WorldSBK Series , Gregorio Lavilla ( doce podios ), Xavi Forés ( seis ), Juan Bautista Borja ( dos ) y a Joan Garriga , Juan López Mella , Daniel Amatriain , Lecuona y Xavi Vierge ( uno ). Y puesto que hablamos de corredores españoles de éxito tal vez deberíamos seguir el ejemplo del gran Ángel Nieto y decir que han sido 12 + 1 los que han subido al podio en el WorldSBK .
A nivel de títulos , dos son los deportistas españoles que se han adjudicado el Campeonato del Mundo de Superbikes . Carlos Checa ya dejó claro que era un hombre a tener en cuenta cuando en 2008 dió el salto de MotoGP™ al WorldSBK , ganando dos pruebas en su primera temporada con una Honda en el exclusivo Miller Motorsports Park de EE UU . Tuvo que esperar a subirse a la Ducati bicilíndrica en V para empezar a romper el techo de cristal de los pilotos españoles . Y con la marca italiana lograría otras 22 victorias en este campeonato asegurándose su primera corona mundial de superbikes en 2011 .
