In the OECS sub-region, some pupils commence their primary education before their 5th birthday. Consequently, when they enrol in Kindergarten, they are regarded as being under-aged for their class. As shown on figure 3.4, there is a small proportion of these children progress through the cycle being the youngest in their grade (see figure 3.4). The majority of pupils are at classified as being class aged (see figure 3.4). This means that they are at the specified age for their grade such as 5-years-old in Kindergarten, 6-years-old in Grade etc. At the other end of the spectrum there are some children who are over the specified age for their given grade and hence, regarded as being over aged.

At the secondary level, enrolments range approximately from 1100 upwards to 11,000 for the Academic year 2022-2023 as shown on figure 3.5. In the secondary level, the enrolment is lower than that of the primary cycle. Nevertheless, the variations in enrolment show similar patterns to those observed in the primary sector. Similarly, Anguilla and Virgin Islands have the smallest enrolments while the largest enrolments are seen in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia respectively.
