comic researcher CT Lim talks about the disjuncture in
the little-known political cartooning sphere in Singapore.
In Open Call, Cherilyn Woo attempts to record the
constant discord in her mind through words and images.
In mid-March, the Sunflower Student Movement
blossomed in Taiwan. There were outbursts of
dissonance on Facebook, but mostly lacking insights.
I chanced upon an insightful take on the movement
written by a Taiwanese sociology professor, Chao Kang,
and was deeply enlightened. Thus I asked for his
permission to republish his essay here, and he agreed
without hesitation. The essay can be found in
Extra Feature.
In this issue, we have invited local artist/photographer
Hong Guoyao to curate the visuals. We also partnered
again with local graphic designer Yong Yi for the layout
design. Their works of genius have greatly enhanced the
theme of this issue — the discord in the visuals bringing
about the harmony in the editorial.
Without further ado, shall we listen to the sound of
‘discord’, and contemplate ‘harmony’ and ‘order’?
