Like in the past, this Seminar brings all of us together, not only to discuss issues concerning the Tamil Language; but also to reflect upon wider topics of importance to us. While we may take our sense of purpose from the past; there is a need for us to take an even deeper look at how we could better evolve our Language, our Culture and our value systems to face the future with pride and confidence. Since its inception in 1975, NUS Tamil Language Society (NUS TLS) has not only been making praiseworthy impact on the Tamil Speaking Community in Singapore; but has also been instrumental in inspiring many Indian undergraduates to go beyond their personal pursuits to become thinkers, contributors and leaders. The biennial Tamil Seminar series is one of the founding activities of the Society and this year we witness a major milestone in this series. I had the privilege of writing forwards to the Seminar Magazines on three different occasions. The first, when I was a student of NUS and Chairman of TLS in 1981. The second when I was invited as Guest-of-Honour to one of the Seminars; and now on this third occasion, as an Adviser. I encourage the youthful participants of the Seminar, to keep an open mind and engage in constructive dialogue; listen more than you speak; and keep this platform relevant to both yourself and to your Community. In the past, we were satisfied with saying that “the sky is your limit”; The adage of present is that “your vision is your limit”; Future can be best described as one of “limitless boundaries”. I congratulate the TLS Ex-Co and the Seminar Organising Committee, for pulling of this project so brilliantly. To all the participants, I wish you all an enriching and memorable weekend. R Kalaichelvan Adviser NUS Tamil Language Society The intervening 30+ years, has witnessed many changes within and outside of the Community; including the role of our language; the issues of the present; and our aspirations for the future.
