Over the years , he had generously supported the Armenian Dioceses of Western and Eastern America and Canada , various programs of the Armenian Mkhitarian Congregation of Venice and Vienna . In recognition of his enormous contributions , Wayne State University in Detroit renamed its Ethnic Heritage Center to Alex Manoogian Hall .
He donated to the University of Michigan to support the Gerald Ford Library and to establish two Chairs dedicated to Armenology : the Alex Manoogian Chair for Modern Armenian History and the Marie Manoogian Chair for the Armenian Language and Literature . During his life , Alex Manoogian was recognized as the greatest philanthropist of the nation , who donated multi-million dollars for charitable , religious , cultural and educational purposes .
In appreciation of his humanitarian activities , Manoogian was awarded : the Ellis Island award from NECO and the Knight of Charity award from PIME Missionaries ; the Presidential medal from Argentina ; the Cross of St . Gregory the Illuminator by His Holiness Vasken I , the Catholicos of All Armenians ; the First Order of the Cedars by the President of Lebanon ; the Cross of St . James by his Beatitude the Patriarch of Jerusalem . In 1994 , Alex Manoogian was awarded the title of the National Hero of the Republic of Armenia , and granted Armenian citizenship . The President of Nagorno-Karabakh awarded Alex Manoogian the Medal of Honor of Artsakh . Manoogian received honorary doctorate degrees from Lawrence Technological University in South-
