VLATADON MONASTERY
Vlatadon Monastery is a monastery that is located to Ano Polis area of Thessaloniki and it is the only byzantine monastery that still works today. It was found in around 1371 – 1379 by the metropolitan of Thessaloniki Dorotheos Vlattis and his brother Mark with the contribution of the empress Anna Palaiologina. After the conquest of Thessaloniki in 1430 by the Turks, it was renamed to Chaus Monastery and it continued to function as a monastery. During Ottoman domination in Thessaloniki, it had many profits which were given by the Turks and they were bound with a ukase of Mahomet the 2nd in 1446. In 1633 Kyrillos Loukaris with its sigillium, he annexed the monastery as a dwelling in the Iberian monastery in Mount Athos. In 1870, a fire destroyed a big part of the monastery, including its library The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople covered the expenses to be repaired. Nowadays it belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and from the original building only the chancel and some architectural figures are saved.
