devotion to your profession for a cause you didn’ t get to have a say on?
If that isn’ t unfair, I don’ t know what is. How should this make someone who is sacrificing their life for their family’ s sake feel, knowing painfully that things could be significantly easier, had they just been a little more fortunate? All that work could have been avoided. All those early mornings forcing themselves out of bed to slave away for a system so unjust, so imbalanced, simply unnecessary. For those people, ignorance is in fact bliss, because nothing feels the same after the realisation of the futility of today’ s working life, where mediocrity is rewarded and remaining honest and ethical deems you part of a disadvantaged minority. Wouldn’ t much rather revert time and go back to when you were working for a cause having not been made aware of the uselessness of said work in the grand scheme of things?
Take another example! Quite possibly one of the few universal human experiences, a child’ s naivety; something wonderful, pure and genuine. In your young years, you feel invincible, are filled with ambition, think you can accomplish anything. Only factor limiting you is your age. You look around and gaze at teenagers with jealousy: these cool-looking kids, not much older than you, that seem so easy going, so carefree. They are allowed to go out on their own without constant supervision, they are given a larger allowance, their opinion matters more than your own, simply because of age.“ Oh, how amazing it would be to have that. I wish I was older”. We have all fallen into this trap and we have all realised how ignorant this thought is.
Not to be critical of course, though. It is something completely natural, albeit far from the truth. Getting older does mean increased freedom, yes. Increased freedom, however, in turn equals more commitments and, unfortunately, larger responsibility. Having someone else— take parents, for example— make the decisions for you exempts you from any form of personal responsibility; nobody will blame a child for simply obeying their parents. As long as they are obeying someone older at least.
Being older sets you free of the bounds of your younger self, so you are free to do
