The Acropolis comes from the Greek word akron , which means the highest point and polis which means city . So , the Acropolis means the highest point of the city . The word Acropolis refers to any top point or pick of a Greek city but it usually refers to the Athenian Acropolis because of its fame .
The Parthenon :
The Parthenon is just one of the buildings on top of the Acropolis . So , if you are wondering what is the difference between the two words you can just consider the Parthenon to be part of the Acropolis .
So what ’ s the difference between them ?
The Parthenon is dedicated to Athens and is the largest monument on the Acropolis . Generally , the Acropolis is the area where the Parthenon is located .

The Parthenon and many other buildings on the Acropolis were severely damaged by the Venetians during the Morean war , when a cannonball hit the reserves of gunpowder that were being stored in the Parthenon .

The Acropolis Museum is one of the best known Museums in Athens . Given its location , at the top of a hill , it has a breathtaking view . Furthermore , it was built around 2009 and it ’ s based on the history of the Acropolis . Moreover , it contains a wide range of findings in the monument . Were I a visitor , I would book a private tour with an experienced tour guide . Except of the plain tours , the museum provides biking and family tours . Taking everything into consideration , this museum is perfect for families that want to experience something different .
Museum 2 : The Museum of Cycladic art
The Museum of Cycladic art has the most interesting displays that make it stand out . It started running at 1986 . Its first use was to show Athens ’ archaeological sculptures that were found near the area . However , after a couple of years the museum started organising drawing , sculpturing classes and competitions . So , right now except of the Cycladic sculptures , it also displays Kid ’ s drawings that won competitions . The museum has housed temporary exhibitions of some of the most important Greek and international modern and contemporary artists . Its value throughout the years has increased and it is ideal for someone that loves art .
