What is retail? Retailing consists of the sale of physical goods or merchandise from a fixed location, such as, a department store, boutique or kiosk, or by mail, in a small or individual store for direct consumption by the purchaser.

Specialist Store: Specialises in one particular type of product or service, it can be a chain, for example, Sunglass Hut. Stores are often smaller in size.

Internet Shop: Trades Solely online, posts products to the customer, can be national or international and can also be associated with a physical shop. An exammple would be Missguided and Asos.

Independent: In fashion, this is often a niche or specialist retailer. An example of this would be a company run by an individual.

Multiple Store: A chain of stores with 10 or more branches, it attracts a larger market. Miss selfridge, Topshop and river island are all examples of this.

Department store: A department store is a large store that has various departments, it would have four or more classes of consumer goods, it can be a chain, also has concessions and often in major shopping centres, it has a wide range of customer services. For example John Lewis.
