A program began in November 2007 for rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned manatees. The Amazon Rescue Center has an outstanding environmental education program that is the core of the conservation project. The center has rescued, rehabilitated and/or released other mammals including Amazon River dolphins, Giant otters, Neotropical otters, Giant anteaters and Jaguars . Since 2008, 40 manatees have been part of the program.

We started off by watching videos of the mission of the conservation center and then ventured to the temporary habitats We saw turtles, an ocelot, otters, a variety of monkeys, sloths, parrots and more. The mission of the center was clearly explained and loads of information was shared with our group. It was a fantastic way to start our experience!

On March 25th we boated to Iquitos to visit La Isla de los Monos. La Isla de los Monos, The Island of the Monkeys, is a family run rescue since 1997. They rescue, rehabilitate and release the monkeys once they are ready. Over 200 monkeys, have been released!

The island is located off the Rio Amazonas River. It is a small island with many trees and a number of wooden structures that house different monkeys. Monkeys were swinging playfully from the tree tops and jumping from branch to branch. In amazement we huddled beneath the closest tree, a monkey swung down and grabbed Katherine’s glasses. We all broke out in laughter. Some of the monkeys were hilarious and full of energy, while others were aggressive and watchful. The larger monkeys, like the spider monkey and

woolly monkeys, would attack the titis and the howler monkeys. This was an amazing experience, to learn about Amazonian wildlife and see the rehabilitation first hand.
