SAINT DIMITRIOS CHURCH
One of the most famous buildings in Thessaloniki is Saint
Dimitrios church. This is the place where Saint Dimitrios died. The
church was built centuries ago, during the Roman Empire era. At
first, it was a very small church, but some years later several
additions were made to the original building, making it the large
church it is now. During the fire disaster in 1917, the church was
burned down. Fortunately, thirty one years later, it was restored.
It is the biggest church in the city. It is very beautiful inside.
However, the real greatness of the church is underground. This is
where one can visit the place that
used to be the prison many people
died in, including Saint Dimitrios.
His holy relics are buried on
the ground floor. There, you
can also see many mosaics and pictures. Apart from the saint
Dimitrios grave, there is also the Louka Spandoyni grave.
