Guy’ s surgeon’ s special gift

John Taylor was a former student, staff member, and – in his latter days – a patient of Guy’ s Hospital.
Before he sadly died from cancer in 2014, John chose to leave a gift from his estate to the Cancer Centre.
John’ s incredible donation of £ 550,000 contributed to the development of the centre, as well as vital tools for diagnosing cancer and providing the best treatment.
John said,‘ My happiest memory was the pride of being a student at Guy’ s Hospital Medical School. I wanted to recognise the outstanding clinical education I received, based in facilities that were, in the main, constructed through the philanthropy of others over 300 years’.

Advocating survivorship

A generous donation from Rola Gordon( pictured) and her husband Lloyd has created The Gordon Survivorship Centre in the new Cancer Centre. Patients can get support tailored to their own unique needs to help with the physical, mental, emotional and social impact of cancer.
Breast cancer survivor Rola is a committed advocate for people like her who are living with, and beyond, their cancer diagnosis.
‘ As a cancer survivor, the disease shouldn’ t define how you live, it should just be there in the background – preferably very far in the background,’ says Rola.‘ My hope is that the new Cancer Centre at Guy’ s will make a cancer diagnosis less scary and that patients and their carers will realise they can still live a full life alongside cancer.’
