intro to congress
Students returned to campus this
year to the buzz of news about a
cheating scandal involving students
enrolled in Government 1310. Nearly half of the students enrolled in the
class were accused of plagiarization or inappropriately collaborating
on the open book, open note, open
internet take-home exam. The Ad
Board reviewed all cases individually,
but many took issue with the slow process and what was seen as poor handling of the situation by the College’s
disciplinary board. Roughly half of the
cases resulted in disciplinary action.
construction
As part of Harvard’s Common Spaces
program, the Science Center Plaza
underwent construction to become a
more functional social space beginning
May 2012. Additionally, 2012 marked
the initiation of the the House Renewal
projects. The process of renewing
all
the
undergraduate
houses is estimated to stretch for
nearly a decade, with the first house,
Old Quincy, expected to complete renovations by Fall of 2013.
record admissions
For the seventh consecutive year,
a record low percentage of
applicants received offers of
admission to Harvard College.
A total of 5.8 percent of 35,023
applicants were admitted to the Class
of 2017. “Unprecedented levels of financial aid played a major role in
producing a record applicant pool
and an admitted group that promises
to be one of the best in Harvard’s
history,” said William R. Fitzsimmons,
dean of admissions and financial aid.
