linsanity
In February 2012, after joining the
New York Knicks, Harvard graduate Jeremy Lin led an unexpected
winning streak and was promoted
to the starting lineup, generating a
global following known as “Linsanity.” Harvard even released one

summer of 2012, Lin signed a threeyear contract with the Rockets.
Lin is the first American of Chinese
or Taiwanese descent to play in the

sandy & nemo
Harvard canceled classes for the
first time in 34 years when Hurricane Sandy plowed through
Cambridge with 60 mph gusts
of wind that littered the Yard with
broken boughs and shattered the
Pforzheimer tower window. A short
three months later, Harvard once
again canceled classes in response
to Winter Storm Nemo, Boston’s
fifth largest blizzard on record.
ice skating
Starting in the winter of 2012,
Harvard Skate became a fixture of
the Science Center plaza for two
months every year. Bringing joy to
all ages throughout the bleak midwinter, this outdoor ice rink is the site
of many study breaks and social
gatherings. Whether starting out on
the ice for the very first time or bringing out the long-dormant hockey skills,
students and community members
found time to take part in making the
rink a worthwhile Harvard tradition.
