Do:
>> Align your profile with your goals.
>> Know your privacy settings.
>> Learn from other profiles and people.
>> Develop your writing skills. Good
communication skills are key.
>> Leverage other brands to build your
own.
Don’t:
>> Promote yourself. Focus on your goals
and your audience.
>> Be passive about your online presence.
If you don’t control what’s out there, it
might come back and haunt you.
>> Go to market without goals and
alignment. People can’t help you
without knowing your goals.
>> Do or say anything you might regret.

self-promoting on social media:
the dos & don’ts
As part of our Business Technology Seminar series, we
teamed up with Wharton Europe on October 18 to host a
seminar discussing self-promoting on social media.
A big crowd joined us to listen to our guest speaker Patrick
Baynes—technology entrepreneur, marketing executive
and social media expert—give his best advice about how
to build a social media profile that stands out. He also
talked about what not to do, and the importance of being
in control of what information is available about you on
the internet. If you’re not careful, Baynes said, things you
publish online can come back and haunt you for years
to come. It might even cost you your dream job—or your
relationship.
The most important thing to have in mind when building
your social media profile, according to Baynes, is to have
a goal or objective. No matter if you’re building a profile
for yourself or for a business, you need to know what you
want to accomplish, and make sure that your profile aligns
with those goals. Research other people and businesses for
inspiration and don’t be afraid to leverage other brands to
build your own.
