event: crayfish party august 17 crayfish party A successful Crayfish Party needs three components: good food, good drinks and good company. All those components were included when we hosted our annual Crayfish Party in collaboration with the American Swedish Historical Museum on August 17. For days, the Museum were hard at work preparing the food for the party—this year they even cooked the (live!) crayfish themselves! During the beautiful (and H O T!) summer night—spent in the museum’s party tent overlooking the lush greenery of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park—the guests got to feast on crayfish, meatballs, cheese pie, dill potatoes, beet roots and more, accompanied by the mandatory schnapps and singing of silly drinking songs. The night was rounded off with a delicious strawberry cake and some nice and chilling lingonberry ice water. crayfish party — origins: The Crayfish Party is a 100-year-old Swedish tradition, and came about due to risk of over- fishing. In the early 1900’s, river crayfishing was restricted to only a couple of months, starting in August, and crayfish thus became an exclusive delicacy. To celebrate the much anticipated crayfish season, as well as marking the end of the summer, people started gathering for crayfish feasts all through the land. To this day, it’s one of Sweden’s most beloved traditions. sacc-philadelphia year in review 2018 It was a great evening, and we’re already looking forward to the next Crayfish Party!
