We had a look around the very small ‘museum’ as well as the church and graveyard where previous inhabitants of the island are buried. There’s lots of interesting history to be discovered on Lundy! We had a little walk down to one of the beaches at the end of the day to wait for the boat and were lucky enough to see some seals popping their heads up out of the water – the island is home to around 100-120 Grey Seals.
On the way back to Ilfracombe we had a talk from one of the boat’s crew about the history of the boat and potential job opportunities. He then took us to the bridge of the boat to see the captain and he told us all about what his job involves and how he became the captain of a boat after mining underground for around 20 years... that’s what you call a career change!!
The trip to Lundy Island gave our young people some new and enriching experiences and enabled them to find out more about certain job roles in the area which they may not have known about, or even considered, before. Our young people enjoyed the day so much they have requested a residential camping trip to Lundy so that they have more time to explore the island.
The new Dreamcatchers Youth Forum was set up to give our young people a platform to voice their ideas and take more of a leading role in organising trips and events. It is the perfect place to discuss ideas like these and for those who went to Lundy Island to share their experiences and inspire others to get involved in future events and opportunities.
