Raving acquired a tenuous connection with The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club through my great-great uncle , the last Duke of Edinburgh , and having had the pleasure of visiting t he Club i n the year aft er its centenary t o lay the foundation stone of the present club house , I feel fully qual ified to provide a foreword to this history of the Club .
Sadly , I have not had the opportunity to see for myself that something has been built on my foundation stone , but I am prepared to accept the evidence ot a photograph that the club house has indeed been built and that it appears to be in active use .
Mr . Norman has done a splendid job in researching the history of the Club and in presenting the result in such an interesting form . Yachting may be just another sport , but it is also a reflection on contemporary attitudes and way of lifa . As The Royal Prince Alfred was founded so early in Australia ' s history , t he story of its foundation and development throws a particularly interes t i ng light on social life i n those far-off days .
I hope the Club will enjoy many years of success and conti nue to give pleasure to many generations of members .
