This cup arose from the famous challenge of Ille Victorian yachtsman Alfred Gollin , who , whilst visiting Sydney in 1904 in his 54-fi , Fife-designed yacht Sayonara , issued a challenge 10 all yachcs on Sydney Harbour that bis yacht was lhe fa .~ 1est in Australian waters .
New South Wales put up 50 guineas and accepted the challenge willl T . Binnie ' s 36-ft rater Bona . Sayo11ara won the first race , 80110 won lhe second , and the third and final heat resulted in a win for tlte challenger Sayonara which tQOk the prize and thereby created lhe cup , considered in lllose days a .~ ! he most important yachting contest in ci1eCommonwealtl1 of Australia .
The cup itself is of silver and not of great value but its prestige is enormous . An important condition in ! he deed of gift made by Mr Gollin was lllat the challenger must sail on her own bottom 10 Ille scene of the coutest . This was similar to lhe deed of gift of Ille America ' s Cup and has , of course , been removed .
Since chat first race the Sayonarn Cup has been held by Victoria , ~ cw South Wales and Tasmania . In 1955 it was won by Saskit1 , an ex-English 8 metre yacht owned and sailed by Bill Northam .
Sayonara , possibly 01e club ' s mos ! famous yacht . Duilt in Adelaide in t 898 she is still hale and healthy in Ille Pittwater . This handsome yacht laid Ille foundation stone for the Sayonara Cup .
