A Montagu Island Race Stan . on the Harbour al1hough they did prefer some form of restricted racing which was more of a race and less of a chase , where the scratch boat was giving ! be limit markers as mucb as 40 minuies . Boats of similar type . s with nam > w time margins were what the average racing yachtsman wanted . The otberprominen1 f earureof these years was the popularity of ocean racing . Perhaps because of the publicity given lo the Sydney Hoban Race , the glamour and noiorie1y given to the skippers and crews . or perhaps because ii wM a very tough and glorious way of spending ! he weekends .
These years of the club ' s his1ory were splendid years of racing on the Harbour , whh record numbers of enlries . n record nwnber of club members , and what was very important to ! he club ' s furure , a growing number of young members owning and skipperinglheirownyachts . Theclubhadneverbeen in such a sirong position financially and with some
500 members and money In the bank things were looking very good . The old raters with their huge spread of canvas bad disappeared and some were sorry to have seen them go . Of course racing in these big old raters was no more exciting than sailing in the sleek , modem metre boats of today . But where is the crewman of modem times who will spend the afternoon aloft in the rigging adjusting the se1 of the topsail , and when necessary climbing out along the gaff and sliding
down the leech of the big mainsail 10 wallt along the boom and back into the cockpit ? And the skipper who would hump big sails and heavy gear through a roaring southerly by scandalising his mainsail ? As one old-timer was heard to say recently : ' Today the sailing men drink beer and smoke cigareues . In my day they drank rum and chewed robacco .'
In 1949 the 9 melte yacht Kyeema won the Montagu Island Ocean Race by crossing the line first . as well as laking time honours . Kyeema .. ooe o ( the outsuwding yachts on the club register . was owned by Colin Galbraith . Several mauers of importance occwred during
the 195 ~ 51 season . Theclubwasincorporatedasa Special Limited Company , which facilitated such transactions as propcny deals . invesnnems and other financial mnners . Under a special section of the 1936 Companies ' Act , Section 34 . the club was thus incorporated buL retained I . he name Royal Prince Alfred Yueh ! Club without the word ' Limited '. There was also a depanure from the usual formal opening day . The Comminec felt the social activities wasted a good racing day to no advantage . The season was opened with a race on 21 October 1950 . and in place of the ceremonial opening day , special irophles ,. ere donated . New Sowb Wales , through the club , again challenged for thcNonhcote Cup . but the local boal . T . D . S1oek ' s Venger , sailedby An : hle Robenson , failed 10 beat the ex-British champion . Y toman , which represented Victoria .
