ecca and David have one of those interesting
stories where their lives had been intertwined for
years – without their knowledge – and it took one
major act of fate to bring their lives together permanently.
“We had lots of mutual friends, but we weren’t aware of
each other,” Becca explained. When the two attended a
BBQ held by a group of mutual friends, they discovered
that the only strangers at the party…were each other. “David asked a mutual friend who I was and if I was single.”
Later in the party, the group was sharing stories around
the campfire. “The conversation bounced from him to me
– and it came out that I was single. Friends kept telling me
to go talk to him – but I didn’t want to. I was sure he was
married!”
David actually wasn’t married, and it took a little persistence on his part to win Becca’s attention. “I wrote a story
about David while working with an autistic child in grad
school. We had writing competitions to help him with his
work. I called Dave ‘Super Man’ in the story because he
was so resilient to my efforts to get rid of him!”
It was an event with friends at Keyhole State Park that
started their relationship. “I have a really shy dog, and she
nipped a person while at the park,” Becca said. “I left with
my dog and was walking around the lake when David
pulled up on his Harley.” David and Becca exchanged a
few words, and Becca walked away, again attempting to
shake David off. “He asked me if he could cook me dinner
sometime,” she said. “I looked around sarcastically like
‘Me? Me?’”

David replied that yes, he definitely meant he r; her retort
was, “Are you sure you want to date someone with a mean
dog?” His reply was, “Anything that gets me you.”
“It was a cheesy line, but I loved it,” Becca said. “I had
usually given out a fake number, but this time, I gave him
my real number. It is a Laramie number so he said, ‘How
do I know this isn’t a fake number?’ I replied, ‘Call it if
you want to know.’ So he did.”
That June event launched their relationship into hyper
drive. They discovered they had much in common: both
love the outdoors; both are Wyoming natives and UW
graduates; they actually lived a block apart for years and
didn’t know it; and their sisters are even good friends!
“That one is pretty funny,” Becca said. “The day of our
first date, his sister was over for my sister’s baby shower. I
saw her there, not knowing it was David’s sister, then went
out on our date later that day! We had no clue we had so
much in common!”
