While the slender fingers of holy David worked this tuneful lyre , as his plectrum struck the quivering strings , he drove away the frenzies of the crazed king , and routed Satan conceived in his heart , soothing the pains of his weary breast . Often playing with this plectrum , the King sang of Jehovah , King of Heaven . He always celebrated Jehovah with golden hymns , and he is celebrated everywhere with this lyre .
STRINGS Rustic deities , fauns , and all woodland gods often follow the strings of Orpheus . His charming lyre delighted swimming dolphins and moved feathered fowl ; it also delayed the rapid progress of the rivers ; and the rocks , hard as they were , it captured with its sound . It mastered the most hard heart of the hideous Tyrant and , resounding , often gave pleasure to Jove on high . I beg that the lyre which alone pleased all should not displease only you .
