Mrs. WIlson's Socks
Many americans flung themselves into the war effort. Loads of people bought Liberty Loan bonds to help pay the excessive cost of the war. Citizens that could not afford a loan could buy war stamps instead. Social welfare groups had organized fundraising campaigns to send supplies and volunteers overseas. The American Red Cross raised $100,000 by auctioning wool of sheep that grazed the White House lawn. Americans of all ages and genders arranged and joined knitting groups to supply socks and sweaters for troops. Even Edith Wilson, who is President’s wife, took part and knitted the pair of socks shown. During World War 1 there is one propaganda poster that said “ Our Boys Need Sox, Knit Your Bit. This is from the Red Cross and it persuades people to knit for the soldiers so they are provided with warm clothes.
