This is the WWI american canteen it was the essential water carrier for soldiers. The canteen was made entirely from aluminuim other than the fabric. The canteen was distributed by the Quarter Master Corp. The canteen would clip
to the soldiers waist
The canteen had a screwable lid on the top connected to the bottle by chain. There was also a part that came with the canteen to for other liquids like coffee or hot water it’s kidney shaped so it would fit well around the side, it also had a clip/strap on the side of it made of tin as well. The canteen would sometimes have a fabric around the metal telling things like what your regiment, number, and etc. soldiers also put their names on it.
