Imporant information to know
The 1917 Harley Davidson motorcycle had a V2 Four-Stroke engine, and was a single seat bike. In 1903, with his childhood friend Arthur Davidson and Arthur's brother Walter, Harley had revised and improved his design to include a bigger engine and an advanced loop-frame pattern similar to the 1903 Milwaukee Merkel Motorcycle, a predecessor of the Flying Merkel. Drivers were responsible for the maintenance of their motorcycles and equipment. Special features to the 1917 Harley Davidson: First year for the olive drab paint. It was also the first year for the center gold pinstripe on the gas tank. First year Harley-Davidson Service School started to teach motorcycle maintenance and repair to military personnel, and in July Harley-Davidson was given the "official U.S. Government classification of B-4," designating the industry and its products of essential need for the war effort. Legend has it that General John "Black Jack" Pershing, famous for his WWI victories, used a small fleet of Harley-Davidson motorcycles to chase American revolutionary Pancho Villa around the Mexican desert on the heels of the Mexican Revolution. Villa escaped Pershing's grasp, but the motorcycle was the silver lining of steel in an otherwise gloomy cloud for Pershing. Thanks to Pershing, the J Series rode on into the battlefields of WWI and made history yet again
