No way any portable wireless technology can send signals very far , so a local system is installed to collect all the on-site pictures and sounds , and transmit them to the TV Compound to then be sent back home - wherever that may be for the different TV companies .
There is a ‘ rigging ’ team that arrives at each track early , running long cables to the TV Compound all the way from high points at the track . At Magny-Cours that included the poles on top of the grandstand at the final chicane complex , so that the mobile RF kits strapped to the camera people and sound engineers ’ backs could have a clear signal all the time . In a way , you can equate that to your mobile phone signal at the track . No phone mast nearby and you do not get reception .
There are many intricacies going on that you may not notice at first glance .

One of the pre-race cable riggers even acts as a ‘ Monitor Man ’ literally holding up a decent-sized flat TV screen ( like an iPad on steroids and with the biggest protective frame around it you have ever seen …) so that the on-site presenters can see the TV pictures that are going out . Or look at a replay of an incident under discussion , all while standing in the paddock as the bustle and occasional chaos goes on all around them , to give that authentic ‘ Outside Broadcast ’ feel . No sense being on site unless you can prove it by having paddock life in the background .
