It is an important venue for motorsport enthusiasts of all kinds in Italy but the true stress test of that I-C-O-N-I-C description comes from what WorldSBK in almost its entirety thinks of it - from the riders to the teams and fans watching at home . And especially those lucky enough to go and spectate at this racetrack located firmly inside Italy ’ s unique ‘ motor valley ’. The parkland circuit is also literally an integral part of a very historic town located alongside an ancient via Emilia .
Imola is unique in so many , many ways , including having private houses located inside the track , overlooking it in some places , like the drop down to the Rivazzas . It is also a heavily left-handed circuit , whereas most other major tracks are run clockwise . The Parco Acque Minerali itself is literally an important central facility for the local community , some of whom who go there to play tennis , football or just hang out when there are no races being held there .
We cannot go any further with this text without acknowledging the problems suffered by the local populace in recent months , with severe flooding causing real suffering for too many . Formula 1 racing took the logical decision to cancel their Imola race weekend in May when the problem was at its dark zenith . We hope for happier times for all when we arrive in July .
Built in the 1950s , the circuit layout has been preened , trimmed and peppered with different shapes and severities of chicanes over the decades , generally to get the overall speeds down as tyre and engine technology really started their exponential growth . Despite this and many other safety or regulatory modifications and advances , the pure parkland ‘ old school ’ nature of Imola has remained unchanged . It is still flowing , challenging and with a fast feel for the riders no matter what any average lap speed says .
The race asphalt ( and long , thin , busy paddock ) has always been hemmed in by the Santerno River on one side … the track was literally called Santerno until re-named in 1970 . Like most of the classic circuits made modern enough to race on , the track design still takes advantage of the many natural features and elevation changes that characterise its very heart .

In Italia Imola è un luogo importante per gli appassionati di sport motoristici di ogni tipo , ma il vero motivo di quella descrizione I-C-O- N-I-C-O viene da come la totalità degli addetti ai lavori del WorldSBK lo considerano i piloti , le squadre , ma anche i tifosi che seguono le gare da casa . E soprattutto da quei fortunati che possono assistere dal vivo alle gare in circuito situato nel cuore della " motor valley ", una realtà unica in Italia . L ’ Autodromo di Imola è letteralmente parte integrante di una città storica , situata lungo l ' antica via Emilia .
Imola è unica in tanti , tanti modi , incluse le case private situate all ' interno della pista , che si affacciano su di essa in punti come la discesa verso la Rivazza . È anche un circuito prettamente sinistrorso , mentre la maggior parte dei tracciati si percorrono in senso orario . Lo stesso Parco delle Acque Minerali rappresenta un ' importante struttura per la comunità locale , che vi si reca per giocare a tennis , a calcio o semplicemente per una visita quando non vi si disputano le gare .
Non possiamo proseguire nel nostro articolo senza parlare dei gravi problemi che hanno colpito la popolazione locale negli ultimi mesi , con gravi inondazioni che hanno causato molte sofferenze a tante persone . La Formula 1 ha preso la logica decisione di annullare il Gran Premio di Imola che si doveva disputare a maggio , proprio nel periodo nel quale il problema ha raggiunto il suo apice . Speriamo in tempi più felici per tutti quando arriveremo noi a luglio .
Costruito negli anni ' 50 , in seguito il tracciato è stato abbellito , rifinito e reso ancora più adrenalinico da chicane di varie forme e difficoltà , inserite generalmente per ridurre le velocità complessive , quando in seguito alle nuove tecnologie che hanno riguardato pneumatici e motori , le stesse hanno iniziato la loro crescita esponenziale . Nonostante questa e molte altre modifiche dovute al rispetto delle normative e dei canoni di sicurezza , la vera natura della " vecchia scuola " di Imola è rimasta invariata . È ancora scorrevole , stimolante e regala ai piloti una sensazione di velocità , indipendentemente dalla reale velocità media sul giro .
La pista , così come il lungo , stretto ed affollato paddock , è sempre stata caratterizzata dal fiume Santerno che ne delimita un lato , tanto che la pista si chiamava proprio “ del Santerno ” fino a quando non è stata ribattezzata nel 1970 . Come la maggior parte dei circuiti classici ,
