Marco Melandri , also a champion in the smaller GP classes but not quite champion of MotoGP™ , scooped up a literal fistful of five MotoGP™ race wins . He would repeat that victory trick 22 times on a variety of WorldSBK machines , including the Yamaha he won his first on .
Four other countries have riders that can boast at least one MotoGP™ and WorldSBK victory across their careers . To Japan , and the definition of a mercurial racer , Makoto Tamada . He blew the WorldSBK guys into the weeds at Sugo a couple of times before heading to Europe and the MotoGP™ class to win two races . One in Brazil and one at Motegi .
Regis Laconi was a star rider in both WorldSBK and previous to that , MotoGP™ championships . A ‘ stroker-era ’ single race winner in MotoGP™ ( Valencia in 1999 ) he went on to nearly win the WorldSBK championship . He took 11 wins in all , and that ’ s what brings him into this story .
Current WorldSBK hyper-rider Alvaro Bautista didn ’ t win a MotoGP™ race but he ’ s up into the 50s now in terms of WorldSBK wins . So , it falls to the only previous Spanish WorldSBK champion Carlos Checa to represent Spain in the ‘ Double Paddock ’ race winners ’ category . He had two 500cc GP victories followed by 24 WorldSBK successes . Even two on a Honda , pre-staging another 22 for Ducati .
One country left to consider … Can you guess which ? Yes , it is the UK - or as it was once called , ‘ Superbike Island .’ So who ’ s won both WorldSBK races and MotoGP™ races from the UK ? Must be a few of them , surely ? No . Just one rider . Not four-times WorldSBK champ Carl Fogarty , not double champion James Toseland , nor one time champ Neil Hodgson . Not even Jonathan Rea or Tom Sykes . That rider is Cal Crutchlow , a three time race winner in each class .
The question right now is has Petrucci already achieved his ambition of winning a WorldSBK race at Magny-Cours , to join the illustrious cross-paddock victory elite after this text was written ? Or is he still waiting ? Will it even come to pass here at Motorland ? Who knows right now ? But we can all enjoy finding out . . donde ganaría dos Grandes Premios , uno en Brasil y otro en Motegi . Por lo tanto , corresponde al único campeón español anterior de WorldSBK , Carlos Checa , representar a ese país en nuestra particular clasificación . El piloto catalán se adjudicó dos Grandes Premios en su etapa en la clase 500 , consiguiendo después 24 victorias en WorldSBK , las dos primeras con Honda y el resto sobre una Ducati .
Y terminamos este recuento en el Reino Unido o -como se le llamó una vez- la ' Superbike Island '. Entonces ¿ quiénes son los bravos pilotos británicos capaces de imponerse en WorldSBK y MotoGP™ ? Pues solo hay uno , y se trata del cuatro veces campeón de WorldSBK Carl Fogarty , ni del doble campeón James Toseland ni del ex campeón Neil Hodgson . Ni siquiera de Jonathan Rea o de Tom Sykes . Ese hombre no es otro que Cal Crutchlow , tres veces ganador de carreras en cada clase .
La pregunta que cabe hacerse es si Danilo Petrucci ha logrado su deseo de ganar una prueba de WorldSBK en Magny-Cours y se ha unido a esta distinguida élite de pilotos después de que escribieramos el presente texto . ¿ O todavía sigue esperando ? ¿ Sucederá esto aquí , en el Circuito de Motorland ? ¿ Quién apuesta por ello ?
