Dear Christine,

My extremely picky 6-year-old daughter is absolutely disgusted by all types of greens. She despises them and refuses to eat any, no matter what. I am worried that she is not consuming enough vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, and I do not want to resort to giving her supplements. Is there anything that I can do to encourage her to eat her vegetables?

Thanks,

Olivia

Ask the Editor

Hello Olivia,

Luckily, a great solution to this problem—that even I, myself, love to do—is adding leafy green vegetables to homemade smoothies. You can add extremely healthy vegetables such as spinach and kale to a smoothie along with fruits such as blueberries, mangos, strawberries, and bananas in a milk or fruit juice base. Your choice of fresh or frozen ingredients and additional add-ins is up to you. The flavour of the base and fruits will almost completely overpower the flavour of the vegetables, so your daughter probably won’t have any idea that there are even vegetables in the smoothie (unless the colour gives it away). Regardless, with the right balance of ingredients, these green smoothies are a total hit.

Good luck,

Christine
