WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE: THE THIRD SPACE
fishing bay. It retains that tranquillity, and is a delightful place to relax and
unwind whether on the vast sandy beach, in crystal clear waters, or at one of the
town's many bar-restaurants. It is sometimes called Ciudad Encantada, the
Enchanted City, in part due to a long stretch opposite the seafront displaying
whimsical rock formations. Over millions of years they have been naturally and
beautifully sculptured by the wind, the rain, and the sea. The weathering has
created incredible structures out of the limestone, made yellow by the embedded
sand over the ages. The gotas frías, or cold drops, are massive downpours which
occur every so often in the area, and they, too, have played their part in the
erosion. Be sure to have a camera with you as you won't want to leave without
photographs of a landscape both alien in nature, and renowned as a monument
of natural significance.

The Sierra Espuña Natural Park is a paradise for walkers and hikers. Its wild,
natural beauty, flora and fauna, make a casual walk or serious expedition, well
worth the time and effort.
Many sporting activities are on offer from the port. Parasailing, paragliding,
paddle surfing, light sailing, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving - all these
can be experienced by the more adventurous. Alternatively, take one of the boat
trips and view hidden coves and virgin sands, and observe the dolphins. There is
a glass bottom boat available allowing an amazing view of the sea life beneath.
You may be lucky enough to be in town for a fiesta and the Mazarroneros know
how to party. For each of the municipal districts there is a saint. That equates to
fourteen celebrations every year. Each sports a unique and spectacular parade
with a carnival atmosphere that lasts throughout the night. Be dazzled by the
extravagant costumes in a peacock display of colour, laugh at the antics of the
comics interspersing the parade, and be prepared to dance and sing with other
spectators.
San Javier airport is the closest to the resort. The Tourist Board hope a nearer
one, already built at Covera, will encourage an even greater influx of people once
it becomes operational. For others, however,
less is best!
