3-Talk to Yourself!
I will never forget when my 4th grade teacher, whom I adored,
told me that “only crazy people talk to themselves.” I was a very
feisty child and I couldn’t have disagreed with her more, (back
then and especially now!). Self reflection is a fundamental tool
for personal growth.
How can you grow if you don’t have an inner dialogue with
yourself? I know a lot of people that have never attempted talk-
ing to themselves because they were too embarrassed to.
A great starting point would be to sit in a quiet room, no matter
how odd that may seem, and start a conversation, out loud with
yourself. To really enjoy yourself, you must know and like
yourself. Please get over this and make friends with yourself!
Back in the 4th grade, I was terrified to be alone. I was always
with friends, family or my dog. During the summer of that same
year, my best friend, with whom I was inseparable, moved away
when his parents broke up for a few months. I was young, but
I had plans! We were going to swim, and run and go to the fair
and camping! This was the first time I discovered what it felt like
to be lonely.
I had the coolest Aunt ever; she lived with my grandparents
but had just married and moved out. My grandparents had a
modern home with a clean fresh basement. My Aunt was an
artist so she had taken a portion of the basement, (complete
with its own fireplace), and made it into a funky artsy living
area. When she moved out she neglected to take anything out
of this amazing little wonderland. So I’d hop on my bike, go to
grandma’s and get lost in my Aunt’s art, books, magazines and
fabulous relics. My summer was spent in that pleasantly chilly,
fantastic wonderland. I listened to the radio and painted a huge
mural on the basement’s concrete wall. I became friends with
myself that Summer, and it’s been a rewarding relationship that
I have never once regretted!
Some places to start (preferably alone): the zoo, the beach, an
art gallery, the theatre, the movies, a new restaurant, a nature
preserve, a flea market, a thrift store, a dance troupe perfor-
mance, a fundraising event (attending or volunteering). The list
is endless, and it most likely exists in your mind already.
