PICKING THE RIGHT KEYS SOUND FOR WORSHIP | David Pfaltzgraff
When I was starting out as a worship leader, before Sunday Keys existed and before I had even started Sunday Sounds, I realized I was not good at helping my keys player sound the way they wanted to sound.
Back then I spent tons of time every week trying to prepare sounds for them. When you listen to modern worship music, there is so much diversity in what studios and live musicians are doing on the recording.
The Sunday Keys app gives you thousands of sounds for your keyboard. But it can be daunting to know what to do first. Let’ s dive into where to start, and how to train your ear so that you become more comfortable finding the right keys sound.
SEARCHING FOR SOUNDS IN SUNDAY KEYS There are a few browsers in the Sunday Keys app, and there’ s a tool called the AI Patch Builder that can build a patch based on the words you use to describe it.
After you load a patch in the app, you can open the sound browser. Every patch can contain up to 15 sounds.
The other browser is the patch browser. These ready-to-play patches can help you get comfortable with the ways that we layer sounds together.
Don’ t worry, you don’ t have to manually browse through all the options in eithre browser. You can narrow your options down with filters to help you get what you’ re looking for. Select a genre, the context you are playing in, any sounds you do know you’ re looking for, like a grand piano or a warm pad, and more.
As you select them, the list of patches will go from over 1,000 to a more manageable list. It gives you a quick way to build the patch you want. Then you can customize it from there.
The third way is the AI Patch Builder. Type out what you’ re looking for. For example,“ I need a warm pad, a piano, and a big lead sound.” Then we use AI to interpret what you mean with what we know about modern worship music and generate a one-of-a-kind patch for you. You can customize it and add it to your setlist.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT SOUNDS? In the app, you can choose the type of piano you want to narrow down the sound you’ re looking for. Then within those pianos, you can easily hear the differences. For example, you can select an Upright Piano, but there are multiple ways it can sound in the app.
Cloudy- An ambient, modulated, hanging characteristic to the piano
Crunchy – A bite to the sound, with overdrive or distortion
Dark – Less high-end content, to sit more subtly in the mix
Room – Includes a room reverb effect
Hall – Voiced with a larger, more ambient reverb sound
