Drive . The guitar ’ s original sound and pickups come through with a natural transparency that ’ s also very dynamic . It ’ s genuinely an overdriven sound that differs from a hairy fuzz-like sound . The ODD does have more output overall than its predecessor . They were very close sounding other than that . When you max out the Drive , there is a slight musical roll-off on the high end . When you back down the Drive knob , the tone does get brighter .
I love how this pedal sounds on the guitar lines so prevalent in modern worship music . I ’ ve become more interested in guitar tones that sound open and where the nuances of the guitar still come through . With the ODD , I am confident the guitar lines will poke through the mix without becoming tinny or distorted .
The top-end sounds open and uncovered without too much sizzle . It ’ s got a certain smoothness I love . There are two settings
via the mini-switch . The top UK setting has a boosted upper midrange and lower gain settings , commonly called a class A chimed- Vox-like sound . Cranked up , the UK setting is quickly more aggressive gain-wise and will cut through a mix nicely . The US mode is more scooped and will generally be your go-to for cleaner tones . I like it in a clean boost setting pushing the amp input . With the wide-open gain , it ’ s also pretty aggressive with fewer upper mids . You could use this pedal in UK mode for leads and dial back a nice crunch in the US mode . That makes it very useful in numerous applications .
MY TAKEAWAY : The Warm Audio ODD Box v1 is a beautiful recreation of one of the most coveted iconic pedals . It ’ s a change from the many newer overdrives that compress a lot , and sometimes too much . The design was always to be more dynamic and amp-like . I use compression often , and when a distortion pedal compresses too , the sound becomes too synth-like .
This pedal sounds like a great tube amp with preamp and power tube breakup . As an overdrive , I ’ d call it an open saturation pedal . I also love the UK mode tone at 12:00 with the gain all the way up . So musical and sweet ! I ’ ll be using it a lot in the studio . I recommend you give it a try . It ’ s very reasonably priced , with an MSRP of just $ 119.00 .
