pedal . was inspired when plugged into the Delay with the outputs panned hard left and right . The delays melt into each other , and the Modulation sounds gorgeous . They really nailed this . Staying faithful to the original , it takes a little time to figure out what the somewhat cryptic LED readout says when editing . You ’ ve got to look at the manual to learn what the abbreviations are saying . I went through the Reference Manual and experienced all the parameter settings one by one . The original had a tap tempo feature via a rear jack . Back in the day , tempos weren ’ t automatically set to note divisions . To get them precisely , the player or second engineer would carry a sheet of paper converting tempo and note divisions to milliseconds . Very few guys knew the calculations in their heads . Fortunately , the new SDE-3000D allows you to choose between Milliseconds and Note divisions and save them as presets . To get to note divisions , scroll past 1500 milliseconds , and they suddenly appear . Every possible sub-division . For live , the subdivision settings work the best for me .
There are also some cool ways to run the internal routing . You can set the delays in Series , Parallel , or totally independent . There ’ s a low-pass filter that rounds off the top end of the delays and phase switches , affecting either the Delays or the Feedback . These are subtle but noticeable in how they affect the tone of the delays . The original analog LFO function has been faithfully reproduced in the SDE-3000D . They also added a sine wave option along with the original triangle wave . With the Mod button , you add beautiful Modulation for the delays and can adjust the rate and depth with the rocker switches . I love the ability to control both the modulation parameters individually per patch and the Filters and Phase . MIDI features allow for some deep creative parameter control . Still , if you like a more straightforward setup , the two Controller inputs are easy to assign to various things like patch changes and delay volume or the optional BOSS GA-FC controller .
MY TAKEAWAY : The sound of this pedal is outstanding . The retro-vibe looks and feel are faithful to the original . It ’ s weird how some things cost more as time passes , and technology somehow costs less . This unit is about one-fifth the initial cost , is smaller , and has many additional features than the original . The SDE-3000D pedal is more than just another delay . It replicates the big sounds of the 80 ’ s “ refrigerator ” racks on wheels right on your pedalboard .
The combination of non-Linear Modulation with Phase and Filters is classic . I love what it does to vocals and synths in the studio . Having a piece of classic studio gear that you can throw on a pedalboard is fantastic . You must hear it to understand why guitarists would shell out the price of two back in the day . You will love the flexibility in routing too . But the iconic sound of it is the thing .
