While Gibson is not the first company to produce an acoustic guitar with a sound port on the side of the instrument , it ’ s highly probably that way back in 1964 Gibson was the first to put such a design to paper . Fast forward a few decades and the same hands that craft Gibson ’ s trademark acoustic instruments are now building the newly launched Generation Collection acoustics .
While placing these affordably priced Gibson ’ s in the hands of the ‘ next generation ’ is key to this current mission , the backstory is one that is truly generations deep . If you heard about the ‘ first burst ’ you probably heard about Gibson ’ s infamous ledger . Back in the ‘ 50s and ‘ 60s , manufacturers weren ’ t thinking that the instruments they were manufacturing would fetch for far more than they sold for - than when they were new . Where many manufacturers were lax on things like serial numbers , if you pick up a ‘ 50s Les Paul , the first digit in the serial number will tell you what year it was made . There was order to what Gibson did , and that included keeping drawings of instruments they never actually manufactured , which get us to the story at hand .
