That feels cool , but we didn ' t have a chorus for forever . So , I don ' t know , we just sat with it and just enjoyed the bridge and the verses . And then all-of-a-sudden , Gable shot me a text and was like , " Well , I think I got something , the chorus . It ' s like , ‘ praise God ’ because we ' ve been missing that sucker for a while ." So yeah , it landed very quickly after that .
[ WM ] I ' ve often thought , and this is an aside , but I don ' t understand how going from this earth to heaven , we have the immediate joy . I ' ve always thought there ' s going to be something else first . I would have tears . I would just be , “ It ' s all over . I made it , the fight is over . I ' m here !” But the tears would come first and then the joy , I always just kind of thought about that . And Jonathan , you and Melissa are featured leading the song , “ I Believe ”. What can you tell us about this song ?
[ Jonathan ] Yeah . It ' s a special song . We wrote it together with some other friends , Stephanie Gretzinger , Jason Ingram , and Amanda Cook . And we wrote it sort of a couple months into the COVID19 pandemic began . As soon as COVID hit last year , all the fear , all the anxiety , we were all getting hit with just so much . The Lord just kept leading me back to Psalm 27 through it , especially in the first few weeks of it . And David ends that Psalm with this declaration , “ I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living ”. And I had this chorus born in a spontaneous moment . I think a lot of us write songs from these little spontaneous glimpses that we have . We will kind of build a whole song around these spontaneous moments , and I ' d had this spontaneous chorus come out that “ as I bow before you Lord , I ' m going to rise in confidence that I ' ll see the goodness of the Lord in the land I ' m living in ”.
I sat down with those friends and said , " What if we wrote a whole song ? And it was based around what we believe in this crisis of so much fear and doubt and unbelief ." And so , we just started going through , I believe in the blood of Jesus , I believe in the power of the gospel .
I Believe
And I believe the gates of hell tremble when the church starts singing . And we probably could have written like 50 verses , we stuck to two . And our first stab at writing that we wrote a chorus and some verses , and we had a bridge , but didn ' t feel like it was the keeper . And same thing just sat on it , sang it together as a community a few times and was like , “ it ' s not quite finished yet ”. The bridge , the other bridge just didn ' t take off , came back together . Maybe six months after the first stab at writing it , came back together and Amanda joined us this time . And it was a great songwriting moment , because Amanda and Jason have worked on a couple albums together , and Jason ' s kind of like Amanda ' s big brother . And Amanda ' s just sitting in the corner , like just little lightly tinkling on the piano . And Jason ' s like , " If you got an idea , share it , come on . I hear you over there , you ' re doing something ." And Amanda ' s like , " Well ." And she sang the melody of the bridge . As soon as Amanda sang it , I was on the other side of the room . Jason has a really big , beautiful studio space . It ' s a big room . And I kind of shouted from the other side of the studio , because I just felt that spark of lightning that you look for in a songwriting session , the inspiration . And I sing back to Amanda , the
