BRANDON LAKE & PHIL WICKHAM Song Spotlight “ Love of God ”
CXMMXNS Chapter 1 Contemporary worship giants , Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham , have joined hearts , minds and voices to write the modern hymn , “ Love of God ” which describes in glorious detail the journey from death to life that Christ won for us on the cross . Melodically the song reminds me a lot of Wickham ’ s “ Living Hope ”.
The song begins with a simple piano melody with some distinct head voice vocalese ’ s pinging in the background , typical of many of Wickham ’ s songs . Verse one features Lake ’ s gravelly tenor as he lovingly describes the amazement and wonder he feels about of how the King of the universe came down , took our sin and paid the ultimate price for our freedom . He then asks a very poignant question ; “ For what could make perfection bleed for sinners ? What leads a King to pay so great a cost ?” The answer is simple yet complex as he passionately proclaims the answer ; “ All my life , my heart will sing the answer , only the love of God .”
Lake takes continues chorus 1 which is a simple , singable melody about the greatness of God ’ s love and how he paid the price upon that rugged cross .
Wickham ’ s wispy vocals take over verse 2 as he declares that it is only through this kindness and love of God that we can come before the Father and seek His forgiveness and in doing so , cause the darkness to flee from our lives . Wickham goes on to use Biblical ideas from
Romans 6 extoling Christ for taking our guilty sentence of death upon Himself . Wickham then asks his own question before again answering it in the same way as verse 1 ; “ For what could break the chains of any prison ? What force could rob the power from the grave ? What would trade my rags for heaven ’ s riches ? Only the love of God ”
The second chorus features the two men ’ s voices blending seamlessly in harmony adding power and presence to the song making it impossible to not sing along with .
Verse 3 brings the energy and instrumental back as Lake once again takes the vocal lead explaining how marvelous and indescribable this love of God is . Wickham takes over the second half of the verse triumphantly singing about how this banner of love will surround him no matter what life brings until he sings this song in heaven standing before His maker .
The song crescendos to the final two chorus ’ as Wickham and Lake trade descants while the other sings the melody line to victorious conclusion .
Reminding me of Wickham ’ s “ Living Hope ”, this majestic anthem does a wonderful job of giving an honest glimpse into the lifelong journey of the Christ follower by taking us into the mountaintops and valleys of a life of faith . Christ is the center of this song , and it is Biblically rich , melodically gorgeous and just a wonderful example of what a modern hymn should look and sound like . Well done gents .
