It is amazing how every live event has some sort of problem . It does not matter if the event is small or large , handled professionally or by amateurs , there will be an issue once the music begins . As much as we would like to prevent it , preparation , though essential , is inadequate to solve what will happen once underway . Additionally , when problems begin , they cascade and do not end until the service is over . The key to resolving problems both before they start and after they are unfolding in realtime is to have Plan B ready and to implement it with people you trust .
Plan B is the agreed upon solution to anticipated issues based on experience in the space . Given the familiarity each engineer has mixing in the space , it is easier to diagnose and solve problems on a weekly basis in a known room than if the mixing were done on tour in a different environment each day . Trustworthy people are those capable and reliable enough to jump in and assist with the solution , even when it isn ’ t their direct responsibility . When a projector fails to light remotely and a member of the team immediately volunteers to climb the ladder and trigger it at the source ( Plan B ), that team is healthy . When there is a slight feedback in the house , but the FOH engineer can ’ t discern it with all the energy in the room and the broadcast engineer running the livestream sends a text stating there is a ring on vocals mics around 2KHz , that is effective teamwork .
