GEAR REVIEW
THREE MOJO HAND FX PEDALS : OCTAVERSE- SERICON- CLARITY | Michael Hodge
OCTAVERSE FEATURES
• Dedicated Reverse Octave Delay
• Selectable Low or High Octave
• Convenient Size Format
• Nine Volt
• True Bypass
Mojo Hand FX is a well-respected boutique pedal manufacturer out of Holland , Michigan . I ’ ve had the pleasure of reviewing several of their top-notch pedals . Octaverse is a unique pedal combining a Reverse delay that is either an Octave up or down .
OUT OF THE BOX : Octaverse comes with a quick-start sheet and a Koozie Cup Kooler . No battery inside . The coating is a cool dark sparkle blue with a purple logo . There ’ s a 9vDC jack on the right side . On top are three knobs . Rate controls the delay time , Mix determines how wet the output is , and Feedback goes from a minimum of 1 repeat an octave down , or 2 repeats octave up , and both go to infinity and beyond . The delay length seems to max out at approximately 1.89 seconds .
There is a small button on the top that switches the reversed delay between Octave up and Octave down . A green LED lets you know Octaverse is engaged .
MY TAKEAWAY : I really like this pedal . I love the out-of-thenorm yet useful aspect of it . Octaverse is super creative as a special effect for making pads and swells . Octave up is that angelic POGlike sound but with the unique reverse delay . It doesn ’ t sound quite like any other delay pedal . The way they did the max feedback is controlled yet infinite , and very musical . It keeps going on and on without freaking out .
Octaverse could be your secret weapon when it comes to a song ’ s bridge section . There are several subtle settings I really like too . For example , I like the sound of selecting a short delay with a little bit of feedback , Octave up or down , and the mix at 10:00 . There are some Coldplay vibe settings that are fantastic by setting the Rate and Feedback wide open with the mix at 12:00 . Great for a song intro . You can always end the infinite repeats by simply pushing the octave switch . I also found some cool sounds using a volume pedal into Octaverse with all knobs at 10:00 . Great addition into your steeo delays and verbs . If you are looking to have a very special effect on your board , I think you will turn some heads with this pedal ’ s ambient tones . The pedal is also built like a tank and has no background noise . It ’ s a very cool addition to any worship rig . The Octaverse sells for $ 159.00 .
SERICON FEATURES
• Klon Klone with 5 Knobs
• Three stages of Gain
• True Bypass
• Nine Volt
Mojo Hand has officially joined the Klon Klone army . They also got creative and brought a nice twist to it . Instead of just another attempt
to copy the Klone circuit , they added several custom features , and a great price point too .
OUT OF THE BOX : Sericon has a retro looking vibe with red knobs , LED , and graphics in a sturdy silver box with a light sparkle finish . It comes securely packed in a protective cotton bag , with an instruction sheet , stickers and a Koozie Cup Kooler . Input / Output and 9vDC Power are all on the back to save room , along with a cool vintage metal serial number . Though smaller than an original Klon , there is a nod to the layout . It ’ s the about the same size as a Pro Analog Dual Drive . The original Klon has three large knobs : Gain , Treble and Output . Sericon has added two extra knobs : Blaze and Drive and renamed Output to Level . It ’ s a solid build and the potentiometers have a high-quality feel .
MY TAKEAWAY : I am blessed to have a couple of the original Klon Pedals , a gold and a silver . They ’ re very similar , yet not the same , though it could be my imagination . I was excited to compare them to Sericon . I first compared it as a simple boost using only the Level & Treble and just a tiny bit of Gain . To match Klon , I added a touch of Blaze and was able to closely match the chime and body of the original . With the Sericon Gain cranked up I noticed the Blaze control switches to a mid-boost-gain when turned all the way
