there ' s such a focus on sampled sounds now . I always sound like the old guy and in the bands that I ' m with , including For King and Country .
TODD BRAGG ( Crowder ) “ My primary take-away from Charlie Watts is his foundational approach to drumming for the song . Musical , functional , not flashy , but authoritative and always with style . A lesson to be learned on what ’ s not played and how that space facilitates a more powerful experience to the listener .”
JOHN FERRARO ( Larry Carlton , Bob Bennett , Burt Bacharach ) We recently lost one of the world ’ s best musicians , drummer Charlie Watts . Charlie was 80 years old , and his body of work will live on for generations to come .
As a young drummer in the early 1960 ’ s the songs of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were very popular . I would beg my parents to stay up late so that I could watch the Ed Sullivan Show on black and white TV when these groups were on .
Charlie was a self-taught drummer who loved Jazz . Many of his favorite drummers are and were jazz players , and when you listen to Charlie most of his grooves are considered rock . He knew how to lock in a groove and play just what was needed to fit the song .
I think there is a lot to learn from Charlie , using his approach on many of the worship songs that get played in church today . He liked to use dynamics and knows when to lay out of a section of a song . I hope you will take the time to check out Charlie ’ s playing .
RIP Charlie Watts and God bless you !
