all the “ rules ” of designing speaker cabinets and amps , rather , we used our ears . Flat response , warmth , and sufficient power were our goals . Some cabinets are made to be inert . We wanted ours to be live . Think of old Fender thin pine cabinets . They sound great . This mahogany does too .
[ WM ] As we know , many worship guitar players play Taylor acoustic guitars already and have your pick-up systems in their guitars . But you built this Circa74 amp in mind to work with different guitar brands and different pick-up systems on the guitar side and even different vocal mics for singers on the vocal side of it . Tell us how you developed your different presets for both guitar players and singers ?
[ Bob ] Surprisingly , or not , the same thing that makes a guitar sound warm also makes a voice sound warm . Also , surprisingly , or not , most pickup systems are similar enough so that our starting points with the tone controls that we recommend are really just slightly different from each other . We did not view them so much as presets , but rather just a place to start . Slight variations between systems , but good places to start . We did it by listening . This whole amp was all about listening . And yes , you ’ re right , we wanted this to work on any guitar with any pickup system . Pickups are really pretty good nowadays , and nearly everyone I ’ ve heard out there has great qualities . I also cannot stress enough that how a player plays really effects the tone of the amp , and those tone knobs are there to be used ! Make it your own .
[ WM ] I heard that even the selection of the grill cloth material made a difference in the sound . How so ?
[ Bob ] Again , we really only used our ears . With grill cloth we first went for a blend of cosmetic style , price , availability . Don ’ t let anyone who makes something you buy tell you different , as these are nearly always the most pragmatic decisions . If it passed that , then we really just wanted to make sure it didn ’ t negatively affect the sound . Comparing the grill cloth to no grill cloth was a great test . We found material that really works .
[ WM ] Not only are you making the acoustic guitar player happy here , but the 10 ” FRFR ( Full Range Flat Response ) speaker inside the cabinet will serve the electric guitarists on the worship teams well too . With so many worship guitar players using modelers ( Line 6 Helix , Boss , Neural Quad Cortex etc .) tell us what the Circa74 allows the electric players on the worship platform ?
