The Cory Wong compressor goes to another level and is based on a LM13700 VCA transconductance Op Amp . Plugging in , I found the rotary parameter knobs each have a wide control range . Starting with Attack , going left is a fast attack , gradually getting longer to the right . About 12:00 sounds very musical to me . If it ’ s too fast , it clamps down on the pick sound . A longer attack sounds more natural . “ Sustaaiin ” works in combination with Attack , and as you turn to the right , it holds the note longer . Possibly forever !
I find the 12:00 setting for Attack and “ Sustaaiin ” is a good starting point for a spanky rhythm vibe . The Tone knob allows you to brighten up a humbucker , and by backing it off to about 11:00 , it sounds incredible on a John Mayer PRS . Tone only affects the Compressed signal .
For Volume , I traditionally want just a hair more level than when it ’ s bypassed . I like to hit the guitar hard with the Compressor off and then turn it on and off to adjust level . The Blend knob counterclockwise is 100 % dry , and this guy seems happiest between 10:00-2:00 . Since I usually always leave a compressor on , this Blend , also called parallel compression feature is perfect for my taste . Depending on how hard I hit the strings , I can get a good spank and sustain . The Boost is such an excellent addition . The Boost Knob adds up to 15dB in the flat setting , and up to 18dB focusing around 877 Hz when in the mid-boost setting .
The Boost feature is inspired by the famous MDX Strat boost circuit used by some guitar greats like Eric Clapton . The pedal works great with my BOSS ES-8 switcher , and perfect for a smaller non-switching rig . I always struggle to get a clean boost for play lines that cut through a band . Adding the Boost ’ s mid option pushes the amp with added beef , and tons of gain when you need it .
Fantastic for soloing . One of the great things about getting an artist like Cory Wong involved is the little details like the Comp-On switch on the side to disengage the compressor bypass . In the heat of a live show , it ’ s easy to accidentally turn things off . Problem solved !
The DI with a Ground lift is another plus that sets this pedal apart . When going direct into a DAW , this is just what you need to get your impedance right while adding some vibe to your guitar tone . It ’ s a perfect tool for modern guitar players . I tried it on my 72 ’ Jazz Bass in
the studio and was impressed at how tight and balanced the low end was . Bass players will love this for a live rig . It ’ s a one-pedal solution for live and studio .
MY TAKEAWAY : I love artist collaboration when it comes to pedals and guitars . It allows the manufacturer to see and hear their product from a fresh perspective . The details an artist brings can address the needs of real-world musicians . Brian Wampler is an accomplished player in his own right . I think that draws him to get input from other players he follows and admires .
The new Cory Wong compressor sounds wonderful and does three cool things at once in a cool-looking compact pedal . The studio-quality Compressor , Boost , and DI trio is a perfect match for live performance and recording . If you want to upgrade your rig , this pedal won ’ t disappoint . A pedal with this quality and features is a great value and a straight-up winner .
