I had to start the process , in a way I haven ' t before , of finding out who I am apart from what I do . And really getting to a place where I think I have a new understanding of the fact that just me as a person and as a child of God … is plenty for God .
It ' s like He ' s going , " No , I ' m not impressed by your playing . Congrats on your signature Strat ." He ' s not going , " Hey , keep working , show me the next thing that you can do , so I can give you another attaboy ." He ' s just going , " I just want you . Just you , the person ."
I think the things we see in scripture ... If God ' s ever impressed , it ' s just from the condition of our heart . And so that was a good exercise to have to go through .
I wouldn ' t want to have to do it again like that because it was actually really painful . And really hard . And really challenging and scary . To go , " I ' m not my public persona . I ' m a person . I ' m a human being , and a child of God ." So that was good to get reconnected to that .
And then , following that , somebody recommended this book to me that I ' ll pass it along to the readers . You can grab it on Amazon for a few bucks . It ' s a Timothy Keller book called The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness . You could probably read it in 30 minutes . Very short . It ' s about ego , and man , it is like a laser point . And it ' s not a beat-yourself-up thing . Everyone has ego .
[ WM ] That ' s a great comment about ego . There ' s a favorite t-shirt out there that Nita Strauss sells that I like . It says , " Ego Kills Art ." I think that ' s true .
[ Lincoln ] Yeah , ego kills everything . Ego divided heaven . Ego kills marriages . Ego kills friendships . And ultimately , ego kills lives . It kills people . When ego gets out of control , it affects the way we view other people , which affects the way we treat other people . And when you look at what ' s going on in our world , there ' s a lot of that going on .
So I made a commitment early on in the pandemic , when I realized I was going to be isolated , kind of double isolated , that I was going to keep . I have a very curious mind . I am wired to solve things . Probably why I ' ve figured
