through 9 different mic / cabinet choices with an option to bypass all . The Middle switch has : ALT : engages alternate Knob controls . AMP : standard Knob controls . STORE : Saves preset by holding down . TONE : Rock : extra gain , Jazz : Clean and scooped mids , CUSTOM : FET preamp and amp mods for big , transparent tones . There are two foot switches : ON and Preset . On the Back are ¼ inch Stereo IN / OUT , a 400 mA 9Vdc jack , a USB-C port , and a Bluetooth Pair button with an indicator LED .
IN USE : I connected the pedal to my computer via USB-C . I was prompted to register and update the firmware . Once done , Enigmatic also showed up on my UAFX App on my iPhone . It also works on iPad and Android . When you register the pedal , additional cabinet options show up for a total of nine . Enigmatic does its best to reproduce versions of the Overdrive Special . I ran through all of the presets on the App . It takes a minute to connect , so be patient . There are lots of possibilities here .
You ’ ll find about a dozen Artist presets and roughly twenty-six Factory ones . I like lots of headroom on an amp and usually get my distortion from pedals . This , however , is not where the Dumble is known to shine . It likes to be loud yet smooth , and break up with lots of flexible dynamics . I carefully reviewed every preset , and many tonal and distortion options exist here . I love setting the pedal to one of those slightly breaking up tones and storing several with different speaker and amp settings . One thing to note is that there are three basic tones : Jazz , Rock , and Custom . Jazz , of course , gets super clean with lots of headroom . My favorite combinations lean toward Rock with different cabinet combinations . The Jazz settings are fantastic for a studio clean or 80s jangly vibe . This is a pedal that can get the Fender-ish scooped sound as well as a more robust , authoritative overdrive sound . As an Amp , it ’ s very pedal-friendly , and with the speaker emulation off , it sounded terrific through a PRS DGT 15 amp . Going stereo into my DAW , the pedal gives an impressive number of tonal possibilities .
MY TAKEAWAY : I ’ m a Universal Audio fan . I ’ ve had the original Apollo 8 , an Apollo Twin , and the OX . I ’ ve collected lots of UA plugins over the years . They ’ re always solid , sound fantastic , and well-designed . Fortunately , I have a real VOX ‘ 63 Cherry top boost head in the studio , but it ’ s not something to fly with . I got the UAFX Ruby ’ 63 Top Boost when it came out and have used it primarily for live performance . I ’ ll replace it with the Enigmatic or combine them on my live board . I love this pedal , and it ’ s perfect for live Worship events . I can get the headroom I need for the chill stuff and very aggressive sounds for the more rock stuff and signature lines . Make sure to use a strong power supply . It wants to see about 400 mA . The original Dumble amps are few and expensive . I saw one at Jim ’ s Guitars . com for $ 220,000.00 . I have never played through one but imagine what they sound like from recordings made with them . Universal Audio got their hands on a few while designing this pedal . The experts will tell you that no two Dumble amps sound or behave exactly alike . That ’ s a perfect reason to name this pedal the “ Enigmatic ” since the original is truly an enigma ! If you try this pedal , you ’ ll agree it ’ s something special .
