WORSHIP LEADERS
“ THE HEART OF WORSHIP ” TURNS 25 | Grant Norsworthy
As I write this in 2024 , I notice that “ The Heart of Worship ” ( a landmark song for those of us who are passionate about congregational , sung worship ) is turning 25 years old this year . Yep , you heard that right ! From the copyright date of 1999 that I ’ m finding on CCLI . com , “ The Heart of Worship ” is a quarter century old !
What a great prayer of confession and recommitment .
Maybe it ’ s a song we need to sing again today .
Do you know it ? Remember it well ? Let ’ s take some time to remind ourselves of the lyrics that an early-twenty-something-year-old English songwriter and leader of sung worship in the Anglican Church named Matthew James Redman wrote all those years ago . Please read these words slowly , thoughtfully , prayerfully :
THE HEART OF WORSHIP When the music fades all is stripped away And I simply come Longing just to bring something that ’ s of worth That will bless Your heart
I ’ ll bring You more than a song For a song in itself is not what You have required You search much deeper within Through the way things appear You ’ re looking into my heart
I ’ m coming back to the heart of worship And it ’ s all about You all about You Jesus I ’ m sorry Lord for the thing I ’ ve made it When it ’ s all about You all about You Jesus
King of endless worth no one could express How much You deserve Though I ’ m weak and poor all I have is Yours Ev ’ ry single breath

As you read those words , does anything leap out to you ? Is God bringing something - anything - to your attention ? Is it conceivable that you and I need to come back - afresh , again , or maybe for the first time - to the heart of worship ?
Musically the song is simple , beautiful , memorable . Even in Redman ’ s original key of D it ’ s easily singable for a regular church congregation . The melody fits perfectly into a single , comfortable octave offering a warm invitation to every man , woman , and child to sing it as their own prayer - even if they don ’ t think of themselves as “ singers ”.
