Sometimes as a music lover, we get the opportunity to see some of the biggest names in music come together to create a“ super group”. From bands like Cream and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in the 60’ s and 70’ s to Highwaymen or The Travelling Willbury’ s in the 80’ s, or Audioslave in the 90’ s, the melding of already famous artists into a super group has always been a gift to the music lover. This idea of already-famous artists coming together usually looks different in the modern worship genre however, often taking on the form of the so called“ worship collective” where the institution helps birth the solo artists of today.( Hillsong, Bethel, Elevation, etc. etc.) Enter Sons of Sunday, which I would definitely consider a worship super group since it consists of a few names you may have heard of including,
Some of the standout tracks include the declarative opener,“ GOD DID” which features all the guys singing a number of poignant questions about who it was who has always come through for His people throughout history, the answer obviously being the song title sung in celebratory fervor.
“ HOLYGHOST” is a fun acoustic driven Motown toe-tapper about the fiery power of the Holy Spirit in our lives while on the opposite end of the musical spectrum sits the honest and intimate“ Exchange” which artfully lays out all that our God traded to secure our eternal salvation.
The eclectic musical nature of the members of Sons Of Sunday is on full display in all throughout the album giving the worshiper a glimpse into the multi-faceted talent and many different ways these guys have used music to reach a wide audience. This isn’ t your run-ofthe-mill worship offering, this is much greater. From the acoustic hip-hop vibe of“ I Looked Up” or the deep south delta-blues Gospel sound of“ Pray Mama” to the Sunday modern hymn-esque“ Higher Than I”, this album has something for everyone to enjoy. I would say that many of these offerings could be better served as performance pieces rather than congregationally friendly Sunday songs, but this album should definitely find a spot in your listening library. This is a wonderful first album from a new worship super group. Can’ t wait for more.
1. Ancient Love 2. All My Life 3. Beauty Of The Lord 4. Heart’ s Delight 5. And It Rages 6. Born From Love 7. Anywhere Else 8. Back To The Garden 9. Holy Powers 10. Easy Burden
John Mark McMillian was one of the pioneers of indie worship. For over two decades, the Charlotte, NC native has been delivering outof-the-box melodies, poetic lyrics and songs for the church that tend to buck the current tide of modern worship genres. Now after an eight-year absence from the worship scene, he is back with a fresh ten song collection entitled Cosmic Supreme. The album is filled with fervent songs of melodic praise, scripturally rich and creative writing and poignant moments of spiritual vulnerability unlike we have heard before from John Mark McMillian. Thematically, Cosmic Supreme calls the listener to see God with fresh eyes and hearts and to allow Him to rekindle a fire for the Gospel in ever believers heart.
Sonically, this new release firmly sits in the indie-folk genre with a touch of pop here and
