The first 5 rhythm guitar strategies refer primarily to the strumming and picking hand , which is integral to rhythm .
. LOCK IN YOUR STRUMMING . Rhythm is essential , so if we ’ re strumming well , that creates a solid foundation for everything we do . Are you strumming correctly , efficiently , and consistently ? Can you stay steady with a metronome or a solid drummer without pausing , rushing or dragging ?
. ENHANCE YOUR STRUMMING WITH ARTISTRY . Experiment with palm muting , complete muting , shuffling ( or swinging ), partial strumming , hybrid picking , up accents , flatpicking or other articulations that will add character . If you watch the video , you ’ ll hear how much more
. SET DOWN THE PICK AND TRY SOME FINGERSTYLE . Some of the most artistic accompaniments with guitar are played with two or more fingers , creating cascading or rhythmic grooves that allow for individual notes .
. INTERSPERSE FINGERSTYLE WITH STRUMMING . You can have your pick carefully stowed , and the start a song with fingerstyle , and then grab your pick , switch over to strumming , and come back to fingerstyle .
. WEAVE MELODIES IN WITH YOUR ACCOMPANIMENT . You can provide some isolated bass lines , or gentle lead lines with pick strokes in addition to strumming or try some fingerstyle with some melodies along the top . It can actually sound like rhythm and lead together .
