writing things that express what it means to feel displaced and offer hopefully something of a bit of hope to other people that are feeling that .
Because all of our story … we ’ re all , from the beginning of our scriptural narrative , displaced . We were in perfect communion , and we quickly took things into our own hands and messed it up and got booted . So we find ourselves being in the moment of where we are strangers in a strange land , wanting to find our way back into communion .
[ WM ] Yes . Excellent , excellent . Let ’ s look at the song “ Grave Robber .” It continues that theme that despite the darkness all around us , we have Christ . And because of him we have hope . And then you brought up “ Lord of All ,” and I found that song stirring and appropriate for congregational adaptation . I can ’ t wait to hear it and sing it in church . But let ’ s look at “ Grave Robber ,” what are your thoughts on that song ?
“ Grave Robber ”
[ Crowder ] Well , “ Grave Robber ,” man , I was so excited to see that it was the first to go out the door and that people attached to it in a way . It seemed aggressive for radio to pick it . I kind of try to stay out of the whole radio game and let the professionals deal with that , because they know what they ’ re doing . But man , I was super pumped that that was the song that they gravitated towards to roll out because I feel like sonically it gives a great picture of what the whole textures are going to be on the rest of the album . I think it ’ s great . I usually have one track that I feel like has all of the elements sonically that say , this is the personality of this album . And to me , “ Grave Robber ” was that song once we figured that song ’ s sonics out , the rest of them made complete sense to me .
And it was really the hinge track for us to find our way , in that respect , for this album . And so , for it to go out first and then see people , the radio programmers attached to it as well as their listeners , I couldn ’ t have been happier . Because I feel like , also thematically , it tells the story I ’ m trying to tell . It ’ s like , and I ’ ve said this forever , something that Louie ( Giglio ) says at our church all the time , is that “ The gospel comes along not to make bad people good , but to make dead people alive .” And I think that ’ s the thing I ’ m trying to say over and over . It ’ s not that those things are kind of hard here . It ’ s that people are dead here . And that ’ s where the reunion and communion takes place … is when you realize that there ’ s nothing that we can do to fix us . That ’ s right . We are broken , we are dead , and we need that heart of stone
