I ’ ll usually have a slide on , and I ’ ll use the EBow and a slide . So I ’ m kind of gliding up and down between notes instead of jumping in with trying to finger the different notes , it just kind of glues the whole sonic thing together .
[ WM ] For a pedal board you kind of have two boards tied together a smaller board and then a large one .
[ Cory ] Yes , the main reason is because the smaller board is great for acoustic runs and fly dates and things . It just kind of comes apart and it ’ s lightweight , it ’ s easy . Yes . But I love the analog effects , you know , and nothing beats ‘ em to me . So , any chance I get , I just bring both of them with me and plug ‘ em in . Oh man . Use it all .
[ WM ] Love it . Last question here . You ’ ve been a worship musician since you were a little kid serving at church and now as a professional musician . What advice would you tell your fellow worship guitar buddies that are reading this ?
[ Cory ] Gosh , I think the biggest thing is broaden your horizon as much as you can , listen to all kinds of music . I think the biggest thing for me was I didn ’ t just listen to worship guitar styles .
I took lots from different eras . I listened to lots of 60 ’ s music , 70 ’ s , the Beatles all the way up to current day Pop . And there ’ s so much to learn of their approach and to take little nuggets from that and apply it to what you ’ re doing . You ’ d be surprised what it unlocks in you ’ re playing . You ’ ll just hear things a little different .
And then I would also say just discipline yourself . Don ’ t set unrealistic expectations on yourself . Just kind of wake up every day and try and be better than you were the day before .
And if you just keep doing that every day , you ’ ll be really surprised what the Lord will do and where He ’ ll take you . And I think obedience and discipline with your craft is key .
Don ’ t really play the comparison game or anything like that . I never really felt jealous or felt like I was not doing enough or not where I wanted to be . I was just always kept a sense of gratitude for the opportunities that I currently had at the time and was just thankful and lived from that place .
And I think it makes you just a way more content and happier person in general , just to live from a place of thankfulness . And when the bigger opportunities come , it ’ s because you ’ ve earned it and you ’ re the right person for it . You didn ’ t have to strive to get there . And you don ’ t have to feel like you have .
[ WM ] Solid advice Cory – thank you so much !
[ Cory ] Thank you !
